We’ve Got a Mascot! A MINI Mascot!
As many of you may know, British Sports Cars has a subsidiary business called Central Coast Mini Center. Since the new Mini was released here in the United States in 2002, they have quickly become one of the best selling cars in the United States. By name, they are British, but the company is owned by BMW. We were losing a lot of Mini business to local BMW service shops so we decided to start Central Coast Mini Center.
Central Coast Mini Center has been great for business and we see loads of Minis on a daily business. With Justin Jurgens and Phil Honer being the only technicians on the Central Coast that have been through the factory Mini training course, we are at a huge advantage over other non-Mini shops.
We still get calls from other local BMW repair shops asking for technical advice on Minis, so we kicked around some ideas of what else we can do to capture the Mini market. When we were able to buy this 2003 Mini Cooper with a blown motor, we saw it as the perfect opportunity to repair it and have it wrapped with the Union Jack and Central Coast Mini Center decals. We think it turned out great and it gets loads of attention, just as we had hoped. We're quite sure if people didn't know about us, they will now as it's impossible to miss this little guy going down the road. Please feel free to contact us with any of your Mini questions.
Restoration Update: 1969 Jaguar XKE
The 1969 Jaguar XKE restoration is well on its way at this point. On arrival here at the shop, the Jaguar was wrecked heavily in the front. We thought we were going to have to buy a whole new bonnet, but thankfully we were able to pull it and straighten it. The car was stripped down to bare metal to ensure the highest quality of paint job. The XKE is now in its primer stages. It will be primered several times and block-sanded smooth each time until the body is completely straight. Once the body is straight and just where the body shop wants it, the car will be painted back to its original color. We still have a long way to go on this project, so stay tuned and feel free to ask questions or leave comments.

Rare Treat: 1949 XK120 Jaguar Alloy
Every so often we get a car in that is so cool we just have to blog about it. This is the case with this very rare 1949 Jaguar XK120. When Jaguar XK120 production first began, they produced a short run of cars, all handmade with aluminum bodies on ash frames. This is one of those cars and as such is highly desirable in the XK world. This particular car (Chassis #670069) is a long-time local car that has been in storage for many years. We have known about the car for a long time and had never seen it until recently.
The Fifth Annual Gathering of Friends All European Car Show
Sorry for not posting in a while. Things have been incredibly busy here at the shop. We've got some great restoration projects underway and we look forward to sharing them with you soon. In the meantime, here's a post about a very nice local charity car show we participate in every year.
The Fifth Annual Gathering of Friends All European Car Show was held at Laguna Lake Park in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, July 17, 2011. The show is an event all of us here at British Sports Cars look forward to every year. We have been an event sponsor of this show since its inaugural event several years ago. Every year, this show gets better and better and always seems to blow us away with the type and quality of cars on display. Just like the name says, this show truly is a gathering of friends. The event is very laid back and a lot of fun where everyone mingles and gets to know one another on a personal level.
Guest Blogger: Frank Leysen’s Update on Jaguar XK140 Restoration
We've finally started restoring the XK140. It's taken us a while to get around to it due to so many people asking us to prepare their classic for the summer, delaying work on the XK for several months.
After having prepared the body for the paint job, we braced it up and removed it from the chassis. Right now, it's at the paint shop to have its inner panels re-sprayed. The outer body will get its paint after it's back on the chassis.
The chassis has been sandblasted and powder coated. It was in remarkably good condition, with only some minor surface rust. No welding was necessary. All of the suspension components have been sandblasted and powder coated as well. The front and rear suspension was reassembled using new rubber bushes and new bolts and nuts. The upper and lower ball joints are new. The rear leaf springs are new, as well as the four shockers (adjustable Spax).
The rear axle has been taken apart and all the bearings have been replaced. The rear brakes have received new cylinders and brake shoes and the drums have been rectified. The steering rack was disassembled but showed none or very little wear, so we reassembled without reconditioning it. We will convert the car to front disc brakes, so we ordered a kit from Coopercraft.
I'll do my best to keep you folks informed about the ongoing restoration.

Restoration Project: 1969 Jaguar XKE
Here's a car we weren't sure would ever see the road again due to accident damage. The first thing we did when receiving this vehicle for restoration was get it on the frame machine and check the severity of the damage to the frame and chassis. What we found was a huge surprise to us as there was no damage at all and the frame and chassis was within spec. This is great news as it means the car will now be going through a full cosmetic restoration.
Besides the accident damage, the car is in excellent original condition with no rust. After a little work here in the shop, the car is now a running, driving vehicle. After many years of sitting, the car fired right up and sounded excellent. We now have all of the bright work and rubber stripped from the vehicle and it's ready to go out for paint and body.
The car will be stripped down to bare metal and a complete show-quality paint job will be performed to get the car back to its original color. Make sure to check back for updates on this exciting project. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions and leave comments.
Restoration Project Update: 1960 Daimler SP250 ‘Dart’
The Daimler Dart project is well on its way and has come a long way since we started. At this point, the car we've completed all the mechanical work and is an excellent running and driving vehicle. The little 2500cc V8 sounds great and sure makes this little car scoot.
As you can see, all of the chrome and rubber is on the vehicle which really makes the gorgeous color stand out. We have also done a complete chrome wire wheel conversion with period correct redline tires. The stock wheels for the Daimler Dart are not very attractive so the chrome wires have really made the car look great. They are definitely not cheap, but well worth the money spent.
The next step in this restoration process is to get the upholstery all finished up. For this task we are turning to Bryan Purves in the UK to make up the kit. Bryan is an expert at classic auto interiors and specializes in the Daimler Dart. We have been going back and forth with color samples but we hope we come up with a combination our client will like. The interior will be all red with a red top. Once done, we think it will look great against the color the customer has chosen for the paint. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have or leave a comment.
Restoration Project Update: 1964 Triumph TR4 Completed!!!
The 1964 Triumph TR4 restoration is now complete. It's hard to imagine that we started out with a rusty old mess that would not run or drive, and now we have a beautiful TR4 that runs and drives excellent. There were many challenges along the way with this vehicle, mostly due to the amount of rust repair that was needed. With a lot of effort, it was all taken care of correctly and you can't even tell any repairs were made.
Restoration Project: 1962 Triumph Italia 2000
We are extremely excited to be underway on a very special project: a full restoration of a 1962 Triumph Italia 2000. This is car number 301 of 329 built by Vignale and is one of just a handful that still exists today. This is actually the second Italia 2000 we have been lucky enough to restore. These cars were built on a TR3 chassis and had custom bodies made by Vignale in Italy. Mechanically, they are quite easy to restore but when it comes to the body, it's a whole different story. Parts are, as we like to say, made of 'unobtainium' so anything missing or damaged beyond repair will need to be custom made to the vehicle.
Guest Blogger: Tom Tallone’s 1959 MGA Twin-Cam Coupe
I started tracking this car in 2000. I started my search by listing an interest in a twin-cam coupe on my Twin-Cam Register e-mail message board. I got responses from a few people who were interested in selling their coupes. This particular car was owned by George Porter who lived in Palos Verdes, CA. This wasn’t too far from my home so I decided to focus on this particular car. He was also selling a spare "complete" engine with the car. The coupe had an original matching number engine—somewhat rare with twin cams. George indicated that the car was owned by John W. Campbell, Jr. It was originally OEW but John painted it BRG w/yellow wheels!?! I never had any luck finding information on John Campbell—he supposedly was a photographer for Road & Track Magazine in the 60’s and early 70’s.
