Restoration Project: 1966 MGB

1966 MGB Restoration

1966 MGB Restoration

We just started on a new restoration project! This is a very solid 1966 MGB that we sold about a year ago. Our client has started the restoration, but has decided he would like for us to finish it off for him. He has had a great paint job done back to its factory color of red. As you can see, there's a lot of work still needed on this car. We have rebuilt the engine and transmission, and will be installing them soon.

Restoration Project Update: 1960 Daimler SP250 ‘Dart’ Complete!

1960 Daimler SP250 Dart Restoration

1960 Daimler SP250 Dart Restoration

The Daimler SP250 "Dart" restoration is now complete! The car came out absolutely beautiful and it's hard to believe it is even the same car we started with. There were a lot of challenges in this restoration due to the rarity of the vehicle. Many parts were available through a number of suppliers, but some were just impossible to find. Many of the smaller parts had to be fabricated. For more background on the project, check out our previous posts.

Now that the car is done, it's amazing to see how well it all came together. The colors our client chose look absolutely beautiful on the car. The interior turned out absolutely amazing. The interior kit was supplied by Bryan Purves Limited in West Sussex England, and he did a terrific job.

I was not a huge fan of these cars until I drove this one, and I have to say it is one of the best British sports cars I have ever driven. The car has a great, solid feel to it and with the 2500cc V8 motor, the car has plenty of power and a wonderful sound. It is very comfortable and a car I would not mind driving in road rallies and long trips.

We hope to see this car driven and enjoyed for many years to come. Please feel free to ask questions and leave comments.

Shop Talk: Triumph TR3 Transmission Conversion

Triumph TR3 Transmission Conversion

Triumph TR3 Transmission Conversion

With today's driving conditions and the fact that parts and transmissions are getting harder and harder to find, we constantly have to modify and update cars for repair. This is often the case with Triumph TR3s. When our client came to us wanting to update his standard 4-speed transmission to an overdrive, we immediately decided the best route to go was the later J-Type overdrive transmission out of a Triumph TR6. We chose the later J-Type for several reasons; one being that the later type transmission is much easier to find and much cheaper than the original early A-Type that the car would have come with. The J-Type also has slightly taller gears that will help with today's increased driving speeds and has the benefit of being a 4-speed synchro.

Triumph TR3 Transmission Conversion

Triumph TR3 Transmission Conversion

When it comes to installing this later type transmission, it's all pretty straightforward. You can literally bolt this right into place. The clutch, hydraulics, starter, and driveshaft are all the same and will not need to be touched. We do recommend installing a new clutch kit and machining the fly wheel while you're in there. What will need to be modified is the rear transmission mount and exhaust system. Once the transmission is installed, you can use a jack to support the transmission and locate it just where you like it. We used a flat steel plate and a half-inch rubber block to make our transmission mount. We located the steel plate just under the floor boards on top of the frame rails. This way we did not have to cut or modify the floors. Once we knew where we wanted the mount located, we drilled four holes, two on each side, and fixed nutserts into the frame so we could bolt the mount as well. At this point, you can shim the transmission and mount to the desired position.

The next step is to get your exhaust to correctly fit the car. Being that this transmission is out of a TR6, you'll notice the original exhaust system may not fit. In our case, the overdrive unit was rubbing on the exhaust pipe. This was a quick and easy fix as we had our local muffler shop cut a one-foot section out of the pipe and shape it just slightly different for clearance.

When installing the tunnel and interior back in the car, you'll find it all fits right back into place just like it should. This conversion is undetectable from the interior side of the car, and unless you really know what you're looking at, you won't know it is a later type transmission, even looking from the underside. This is a great conversion and is the best way to go if you want to drive and enjoy your Triumph TR3. Please feel free to leave comments and ask questions.

Restoration Project Update: 1969 Jaguar XKE Completed!

1969 Jaguar XKE Restoration

1969 Jaguar XKE Restoration

The 1969 Jaguar XKE restoration is now complete! It's hard to image this is the same car we started with. On arrival, the car had not been on the road for many years and had severe accident damage to the bonnet.

1969 Jaguar XKE Restoration

The 1969 Jaguar XKE was not in good shape when it came through the doors.

Click here to see more of the car as it first came to us.

With a lot of hard work, our body guys were able to straighten the bonnet using all of the original sheet metal. They did an excellent job and even on close inspection, you cannot tell that it has been in an accident. The paint and body came out excellent, and we could not be happier with it.

All the upholstery has been redone in the correct materials and looks fantastic. For the upholstery kit, we turned to David Catron of Catron Coach Craft, who is the best in the business. We have been using David for all of our Jaguar upholstery needs for many years and his kits are amazing.

Overall, the car came out absolutely beautiful and we could not be happier with the finished product. Our client is absolutely over the moon with his Jaguar which, at the end of the day, is what matters most.

Restoration Project Update: 1962 Triumph Italia 2000

1962 Triumph Italia 2000 Restoration

1962 Triumph Italia 2000 Restoration

We are deep into the body restoration of this Triumph Italia at this point. Once all the lead and bondo was stripped off, we found lots of rust lurking underneath. For the body restoration, we turned to Hank Van Gaale of SLO Works. SLO Works is located right next door to us and we are very lucky to have access to such a great shop. Hank is an expert metal worker and did an amazing job of hand fabricating all of the panels.

Once the car was mounted on Hanks jig, we found that the driver's door post had been pushed in more than three-inches due to prior accident damage, and the driver's front fender was almost two-inches higher than the passenger fender. The whole car was literally twisted. With lots of pulling and beating we were able to get the car back straight and sitting just like it should. Bellow, you'll find we've documented the entire process Hank has gone through to get this car looking like it does now. It was a long, tedious process but we could not be more pleased with the finished product.

The car is now off to the paint and body shop where they will be doing all of the fine detail work to ensure an excellent paint job that will last. Please be sure to sign up for our feed or check back often to see the progress on this rare Triumph Italia.

Cool Car: 1968 Triumph TR250

1968 Triumph TR250

1968 Triumph TR250

Every so often we come across a car that is so amazing that we just have to write about it. This was the case when we found this 1968 Triumph TR250 right here in our neck of the woods. This car was purchased new in the UK as a USA spec car and imported here to California shortly thereafter. The car is 100% original and untouched. We rarely see Triumph TR250s, never mind a completely original and amazing car like this. We bought this rare Triumph and sold it within hours. We are now getting the car back up to par and doing light restoration work for the new owner. This is one car we would love to keep and put in our personal collection, but unfortunately we cannot keep them all.

Restoration Project: Triumph TR3

Triumph TR3 Restoration

British Sports Cars technician Phil Honer working on Triumph TR3.

Over the years here at British Sports Cars, we have been exporting and importing cars to and from all over the world as well as servicing and restoring some of the rarest British cars in the world. With the growth of our internet presence, the service and restoration side of our business has really grown and we are seeing more and more cars come from out of the area and from around the world. We just finished restoring a Jaguar XK120 for a client in Spain and are currently restoring a Triumph Italia for a client in Washington DC.

Just this week we have received a Triumph TR3 from a client in Texas. We will be completely rebuilding the engine and transmission as well as going through the car and making it a great driver before transporting it back to Texas. We love what we do around here and are very privileged to get our hands on some of these awesome cars. Please feel free to leave any comments and/or questions.

Shop Talk: MGB Chrome Bumper Conversion

MGB Chrome Bumper Conversion

MGB Chrome Bumper Conversion

Performing a chrome bumper conversion to your late model MGB is one of the best things you can do to improve the look of your vehicle and add value. We have been doing this conversion for several years now and it is quite straightforward and inexpensive. The downside to this conversion is that the vehicle will need paint work as very slight body modifications will need to be made. If you are thinking about painting your late model MGB, then doing this conversion is a must. We have used the Moss Motors conversion kit for all of the conversions we have done and we believe it is a great kit.

Guest Blogger: Thurlow Weed’s Racing History: Exposition Park San Luis Obispo

The automobile race track in San Luis Obispo, called Exposition Park, had a brief but significant history in early motor racing in the United States. A number of forces brought the track into existence. The end of the First World War in 1918, and along with it an end to the need of American farmers to feed large Allied armies in Europe, saw an agricultural depression sweep over rural communities like San Luis Obispo. In 1922 a group of local businessmen incorporated themselves as the San Luis Obispo Exposition Park, believing that they could lift the local economy by taking advantage of California’s exploding automobile ownership. In 1910 there were only 36,000 cars in the state, in 1922 however, there were nearly 700,000. These businessmen believed that a race track would be a magnet for both new and aspiring automobile owners, and bring much needed commerce to the city.

Restoration Update: Frank Leysen’s Jaguar XK140

Jaguar XK140 Restoration

Jaguar XK140 Restoration: Chassis

Frank here with another update from Belgium. The XK140 is ready to receive its body, which is back from the paint shop. We tested the engine yesterday and we have to admit that your mechanic did a very good job! When we first tried to start it, it refused, but that was because apparently the inlet manifold is from another car. It has a hole in the underside where the tube to a servobooster fits (like for instance a MK8 or XK150). After blanking the hole, it fired instantly, and apart from the ignition timing and carb settings, we didn't encounter any problems.

Jaguar XK140 Restoration

Jaguar XK140 Restoration: Chassis

As you can see in the photos, everything has been assembled with new parts. The exhaust from SC-Parts didn't fit, so we had to cut the rear downpipe and re-weld it with an intersection of about one inch, otherwise it was impossible to de-clutch (the lever touched the exhaust). Next week we hope to put the body on the chassis and to shim it out to make all the door gaps correct. Stay tuned!
